City of Light is the story of one of the largest cities in turn-of-the-century America, host of the Pan-American Exhibition and center of the emerging hydroelectric power industry: Buffalo, New York, the ';city of light,'; a fountain of wealth and sophistication admired the world round.

City of Light is also the story of a woman whose safe existence within Buffalo's prosperous ruling class is suddenly threatened by scandal. She has led a rare life for a single woman in her time, as headmistress and hostess for Buffalo's most affluent families. But she has secrets whose revelation would destroy all she has worked for.

    http://www.listentoabook.com/mystery/sus鈥?/a>

It is 1901 and Buffalo, New York, stands at the center of the nation's attention as a place of immense wealth and sophistication. The massive hydroelectric power development at nearby Niagara Falls and the grand Pan-American Exposition promise to bring the Great Lakes ';city of light'; even more repute.

Against this rich historical backdrop lives Louisa Barrett, the attractive, articulate headmistress of the Macaulay School for Girls. Protected by its powerful all-male board, ';Miss Barrett'; is treated as an equal by the men who control the life of the city. Lulled by her unique relationship with these titans of business, Louisa feels secure in her position, until a mysterious death at the power plant triggers a sequence of events that forces her to return to a past she has struggled to conceal, and to question everything and everyone she holds dear.

Both observer and participant, Louisa Barrett guides us through the culture and conflicts of a time and place where immigrant factory workers and nature conservationists protest violently against industrialists, where presidents broker politics, where wealthy ';Negroes'; fight for recognition and equality, and where women struggle to thrive in a system that allows them little freedom.

Interesting. Hmm... It's a toss up between The Getty Center and Griffith Park, or maybe The 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica. They are some of my favorite places to go, there is a ton to see, and they are just fun to visit. And if you've never been to LA, the views from The Getty Center and the top of Griffith Park are great, especially around sunset. If your favorite band was hanging out in your city and you were their guide, where would you take them?
I'd take them to a movie, something casual. What matters is that we all enjoy ourselves. Later on in the night, we can go eat sushi and maybe get some drinks. Then when we get home, we could just hang out and toast marshmallows and have a little bonfire while playing folk songs and singing along. That would be my tour, since my city isn't all that exciting.

  • How many hours (approximately) does a guided tour of the city hall in Stockholm take?

Under an hour, more information is on Stadshuset's web site (in English):

I have 8 hours at JFK New York airport. Please guide me the best way to utilize it to visit the New York city?

If you're luggage is being transfered directly to your next flight, and you only have your hand luggage with you, you can go directly to the taxi stand outside the exit ( you'll see signs or ask someone to show where they are) and wait on the short line to get one.

If you're luggage is not being transfered directly to your next flight and you have to get it from the baggage claim, then you can go and leave it at the luggage storage (operates 7am-11pm, $4-$16 per day depending on size, # (718) 751-2947 ) at the terminal 1 arrivals on the 1st floor or the other one on the 4th floor on terminal 4 arrivals (same price, operates 24hrs, #718-751-4020). If you're lost, simply ask anyone for directions.

From your flight arrival to the exit, all that will probably and hopefully take no more than an 1hr 15mins.

*Remember you're supposed to check in to your flight 4-3 hours before departure because of the long security check.

If you want to get the most out of the city in a short time, you can take one of the many double-decker tour buses. I recommend:

    - Citysightsny, tour buses depart from Broadway avenue between 46th st and 47th st in Times Square, right next to Olive Garden and Hershey's chocolate shop. operarting hours 8am-10pm everyday 鈽?1-212-812-2700 (info@citysightsny.com),. They operate a fleet of deluxe motorcoaches and new double-decker buses with seating on the top deck only. I suggest you call them before you leave the airport as there are many public phones there. Find out how long the tours are. I also recommend for you to purchase tickets/book online to make the process faster. http://www.citysightsny.com/

The fastest/easiest way to get to the citysightsny bus location is to take a taxi from the taxi stand at the arrivals exit. There are signs that lead to the taxis or you can ask. The ride to Times Square will cost you no more than $50 and hope that there's no traffic and also advise the driver that you have little time. You may also take JFK Air Train to Howard Beach Station and connect to the 'A' (blue color) subway line [with destination sign saying [Inwood-207st] and take it directly to 50th st or 7th ave stop or you can take the JFK airtrain to Sutphin Blvd Station and catch the 'E' (also blue color) subway line [with destination sign saying 'world trade center'] and take it to either th 7th ave stop or the 50th st stop in manhattan. When you get out the subway, walk downtown on Broadway avenue between 46th st and 47th st to catch the blue tour buses. If you're lost on the street, ask people where Hershey's or Olive Garden is and try finding the big blue buses in that area- you can't miss them (the JFK airtrain costs $5 and the subway is $2 per ride), but i wouldn't recommend it esp if you've never been to nyc cause you may get lost and it may take twice as long as the taxi/cab.

Here's a subway map - http://subway.umka.org/maps/new-york.gif (JFK airport is on the far right in Queens borough)

    * the E train has a shorter journey so i'd recommend that one.

You will have no more than three hours to tour the city.

There are yellow taxi cabs everywhere in the city. When you're ready to go back to the airport just stand on the edge of the side walk or near the road and raise your hand out forward when you see a cab as we do,and hopefully the driver will notice you and come. On the roof of the taxi, there is small rectangular sign ';medallion number'; with a bunch of numbers etc. When the light on the medallion is lit, it means the taxi is available. When it is not lit or the off-duty sign on the roof is lit, the taxi is not available.

Ask the driver to take you to the airport but first to the arrival terminal where you left your luggage. If you didn't need to claim you baggage earlier then go straight to the terminal of your flight. for example, he asks which terminal , you say american airlines or a certain which may be shown on your itinerary etc. the price will be the same as it was coming from the airport.

subway: To the Airport: Take the E Train [with destination saying Jamaica center, parsons/archer] to Sutphin Blvd station, or the A Train to Howard's Beach station and catch the JFK airtrain from those stations. If catching the A, board trains with destination signs marked with Far Rockaway via JFK Airport or Rockaway Park via JFK Airport.

You will probably be spending about $180 including taxi fare. The faster the service, the more expensive.I have 8 hours at JFK New York airport. Please guide me the best way to utilize it to visit the New York city?
You'd really have to select one sight to see. I'm guessing you're coming in on an international flight. It'll take about 45 minutes to make it all the way through customs and get your baggage (if it's not checked through). And it's possible your flight will arrive late.

Then it'll take you an hour each way to get into the city and back.

Then you have to get back to the airport two hours in advance to catch your connecting flight.

That leaves you under three hours to sightsee.

Do salary guides base the information on the city of residence, or the city of work?

I live in NJ, and I work for a company based in CT.

I've been contracting through them to a company in NYC for the past 2 years.

During a promotion discussion, my employer showed me a salary guide and checked it for my city of residence (NJ).

The average salary is about 25% higher in NYC.

In order to ensure I'm paid a fair salary, which city should we be looking at in a salary guide?Do salary guides base the information on the city of residence, or the city of work?
it is normally based on the city where you work but since you live in a cheaper city and compute i could see they basing it on where you live -- see if you can get at least travel allowance!!!

I have a three Pelican canoes that are 17' http://www.pelicansport.com/index.php?la鈥?/a> I have a two 15' Pelican (a third on order) http://www.pelicansport.com/index.php?la鈥?/a> and a 16' Pelican with a square stern (back) http://www.pelicansport.com/index.php?la鈥?/a> with a 40 lbs thrust electric trolling motor http://www.minnkotamotors.com/products/t鈥?/a> Last year, when they were new, the rental rates were $32.50, $37.50 and $50.00 per day. Half days were $19.50, $22.50 and $30.00. There wasn't a day that I didn't do $200 in rentals. Not bad. Not much effort on my part. That's why I ordered a 7th canoe for my fleet. Probably should have ordered 2-3, but I'm playing it low key this year.

So I take these people who rent my canoes out to fish. Obviously they pay the rental fee. How much more should I charge them for guiding them? I have a 13.5' canoehttp://www.pelicansport.com/index.php?la鈥?/a> I could use that as my canoe. Some spots can only be reached by paddling, but they still fish from dry land.

I know the lake well. I can show you how to get your legal limit in 3-4 hours.

Thanks! How much should I charge as a fishing guide to city slickers?
Set a price and then if you get no customers lower the price. Or you could put out coupons in different adds then advertise different prices so you so which ones you get calls on.

If you are taking people trout fishing, I would think no more than $50. People don't care enough to pay more. How much should I charge as a fishing guide to city slickers?
so you are going to charge people to fish in a canoe with a zebco 33?

    Wow
Guides most always provide bait and tackle. But with the tackle you have listed, you couldn't charge much. If your main business comes from tourists who have never fished before, then a Zebco 33 is ok but you'll never get an experienced angler to use your service providing such inferior tackle. Your using canoes, but you say your fishing in a lake. I can't imagine why your not using aluminum boats. You say you can provide a limit in 3-4 hours, but you don't tell us what your fishing for. What your fishing for makes all the difference in what you should be paid. A trout guide doesn't go for as much as a Muskie or Pike guide. In my home state a Largemouth guide doesn't make as much as a Smallmouth guide. You don't give enough information in your description for us to give you any really specific feedback. If trout are your quarry, then you should also provide fly rods and a good selection of wet and dry flys. If your going for anything more besides panfish of some sort then you need better tackle. As for how much you should charge, that depends on your experience and success rate. If the customer doesn't catch fish, the guide doesn't get paid. Every guide I have ever encountered does business this way. Including me. Did I mention I have been a guide for Largemouth, Smallmouth, Striper, Hybrid and White Bass on the Cumberland River and it's impoundments in middle Tennessee for 18 years? I get $125.00 per person for 8 hours of fishing (most customers won't last 8 hours) The customer is guaranteed fish or they don't pay. You may a better deal going then we in the Answers community know. we just need more information to really give you the advice you need.

Hope this helped in some small way. Don't give up, the life of a guide can be a good one. It just takes a little while to get started.
The average fishing guide cost about $200 a day, or two half days assuming that the guide provides the bait and tackle. A good way to determine how much you charge is to take the average price for your local area, and set the price just under the average. So, I would set my fee (if I were you) somewhere around $150 per day, per person. I would also have a lower fee for non fishers that accompany your primary customers. However, you have to be sure you can produce the opportunity to fill these limits every time someone buys your service. It would be a good idea to have a ';honey hole'; somewhere that you can use as a last resort.

Also, you should require a nonrefundable deposit to ensure that your customers will make it for the scheduled day, or at least compensate you for the day you cleared for guiding them.

Sorry. I don't know any guide. Is there any way I can discourage you from going? I recommend you use your Venezuela time more wisely and book a guided tour to a place like Angel Falls or Roraima. Caracas is a wonderful city but it's a bit dangerous.

Can use a Seeing Eye dog to guide me through busy city streets after a long night of drinking?

When I go out for a night of drinking I don鈥檛 hold back. However, this past weekend I became so intoxicated I was disoriented. Even worse, I had no perception where I was and almost got hit by a car. The bars I go to are pretty much in a 5 to 10 block range and I always walk. So my question is where can I buy or rent a Seeing Eye dog to bring out with me to the bars and most importantly guide me safely home? Can use a Seeing Eye dog to guide me through busy city streets after a long night of drinking?

No, you cannot. Also, please be aware that you can be arrested and convicted for Public Intoxication by walking drunk on a public thoroughfare (sidewalk, etc.). I suggest you get a designated driver or take a cab. Better yet, I suggest you quit drinking.

Change ';to'; to ';for';. Or better still:

';Guide to Living Cheap(ly) in NYC';Is this proper grammar? ';Cheap Living Guide to New York City';?
It's a guide TO New York. It can be a guide FOR New Yorkers or FOR people who want to live cheaply in NYC, but a guide TO New York.
    the ';to'; should be ';for';

What would you like to see in an online travel/city guide?

I am making an online website that's a travel/city guide to a pretty big city (think San Francisco-like, but not New York or London or anything THAT big). Besides the usual, attractions, restaurant listings, information on public transit, the like, what would YOU want to see?

It's just one city. It's not like Fodor's or Frommer's where I have travel guides to all the cities in the world, just one city. So I need reasons on the website for people to visit.

Thanks! What would you like to see in an online travel/city guide?
You need to have detailed descriptions and reviews, as well as contact information for the places you list on your site. You need to obviously have as many hotels, restaurants, attractions, etc. as possible listed. Another thing you might do is in each listing, include a link to Mapquest or a similar site so that people can get directions to these different places.

No, no way. Every such dog is trained for month first without then with the person he is supposed to guide. Its a long an expensive coaching therefore there is no chance you can either buy or rent such a dog. The best thing is to ';rent'; someone to take you home, this will be cheaper than a dog and that person can even tuck you in. :) Best advice? Stop drinking, but hey, who am to judge.
